The North Sea prawn is of both economic and cultural importance to the countries bordering the North Sea, as it is closely linked to maritime culture and local cuisine. It plays a key role in the North Sea ecosystem by serving as food for other marine animals and contributing to the marine food chain.

Sustainable fisheries management measures are important to protect stocks. Due to increasing demand, sustainable fishing is no longer sufficient, so aquaculture of North Sea prawns offers potential for resource-saving production. However, aquaculture is currently still in the development phase, with the aim of creating a demonstrator that will enable production in recirculating aquaculture systems and safeguard Schleswig-Holstein's cultural heritage.
